Arithmetic is a topic of math having to do with the manipulation of numbers. This course will teach you the ins and outs of arithmetic, including fractions, radicals, exponents, bases and more! Although it is recommended (and assumed considered you can read this text well) that you understand basic mathematics, you do not need to know any math to start reading this course! Just select the topmost page and start reading from there. There will be examples on the bottom of each page for helping you understand the concepts further. Enjoy!

The goal of This course is to create programmed instruction (PI) math lessons ranging from basic math all the way up through the end of high school math (usually trig). The idea of PI is that lessons can be learned in any order as long as subordinate lessons (pre-requisites) are taught before superordinate ones. For example, one would learn counting, then addition, then subtraction, then multiplication, then division. After this they would have the choice of learning either long division or fractions. After learning multiplication and division of fractions, one would have the choice of either mixed numbers or proportions. The content will be similar to the other math courses, but it will be presented in a non linear way. This way one can learn what they want to without having to learn extra material, and can learn the material in any order they choose. The challenge of this project will be figuring out what the prerequisites of each lesson are, and then directing the user to their options for their next lesson. Content can be freely copied from PlanetMath.org, and any course in public domain (published before 1923) or released under the GFDL. Also note, the material on MathWorld is copyrighted so do not copy directly it as there have been legal problems with this website before. If this project is a success then it will be expanded to other subject areas.

This course is aimed at those who want to improve their numeracy and arithmetic skills. It presents a wide range of techniques to simplify numerical calculations (to the point where many can be performed mentally without writing down any working). As well as describing these techniques, This course promotes a different way of approaching arithmetic problems than the traditional one taught in most schools. Specifically, the course promotes the idea that it is better to learn a wide range of techniques to solve a problem, (each technique optimised for a particular problem type), rather than learn just one general purpose technique to solve all problems in a particular class. Learning multiple techniques may initially seem like more work, but it will be seen that most of these techniques are very simple, making many seemingly difficult problems much easier to solve (by taking advantage of specific properties that are not present in the general case). Perhaps even more important than the more efficient arithmetic techniques is the deeper understanding gained by being aware of multiple approaches to the solution of any particular problem.
